Bromfenac ophthalmic solution (0.07%) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) prescribed for the treatment of postoperative inflammation of eyes and to lower post-operative ocular pain in cataract patients.

Pharmacodynamics

Bromfenac ophthalmic solution is a prostaglandin biosynthesis inhibitor that blocks synthesis of cyclooxygenase 1&2 that mediates inflammation including ocular inflammation. Bromfenac ophthalmic solution lower elevated IOP, vascular permeability, vasodilation and leucocytosis.

Precautions

Asthmatic patients should use Bromfenac ophthalmic solution with precautions as it may cause serious allergic reactions due to the presence of sodium sulfite. Bromfenac ophthalmic solution may delay or worsen wound healing. Bromfenac ophthalmic solution may impair platelet aggregation and increase bleeding risk in eye tissues. Corneal reactions and keratitis are common in Bromfenac ophthalmic solution treatment due to corneal ulceration, erosion or perforation.

Dosage

Apply one drop of Bromfenac ophthalmic solution, once daily, in the affected eye, one day prior to cataract surgery. The treatment should be continued until 14 days, post-operative period.
Concomitant therapy Concomitant therapy with cycloplegics, alpha-agonists, beta-blockers, mydriatics and carbonic anhydrase can be considered, if needed. Bromfenac ophthalmic solution and other ophthalmic drugs should be administered with at least 5 minutes apart.
