Econazole nitrate is an antifungal medication of the imidazole class. It is used as a cream under the brand names Spectazole (US), Ecostatin (Canada) and Pevaryl (Western Europe) to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot, tinea or pityriasis versicolor, ringworm, and jock itch.
Econazole modifies the permeability of cell wall membrane in fungi; may interfere with RNA and protein synthesis, and lipid metabolism. Absorption Insignificant (topical or vaginal).

Vaginal Vaginal candidiasis Adult: 150 mg pessaries once daily at bedtime for 3 consecutive nights or a single dose of 150 mg (as a long-acting formulation). Alternatively, 5 g of 10% cream every night for 2 wk. Topical/Cutaneous Skin fungal infections Adult: Apply 1% cream, lotion, powd or soln up to tid. Continue for 2-4 wk. Child: Same as adult dose. Topical/Cutaneous Nail fungal infections Adult: As 1% cream/lotion: Apply once daily under occlusive dressing.
