Etanercept, an immunomodulating anti-TNF-alpha biologic, is indicated for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis, psoriatic arthritis (PsA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and plaque psoriasis (PsO). Etanercept can be prescribed either as a monotherapy or as a combined therapy with methotrexate.

Etanercept can cause infections, bronchitis, immunogenicity, injection-site reactions and autoimmunity against nuclear antigens. Some of the other reported adverse events of Etanercept upper respiratory tract infection, non-upper respiratory tract infection, pruritus, rashes, diarrhoea, hypersensitivity, pyrexia, urticaria and skin rashes.

Precautions

Etanercept is contraindicated in patients with serious and invasive fungal infections and tuberculosis and malignancies including lymphoma, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. Caution should be exercised while prescribing Etanercept to heart patients, juvenile patients, atopic individuals and latent hepatitis B virus infected patients.
