Sulbutiamine, a synthetic derivative of thiamine (vitamin B1), is prescribed for the treatment of asthenia including post-infective asthenia, psychological stress, post-partum asthenia, intellectual asthenia and emotional disorders. Sulbutiamine is also used to improve memory.


The exact mechanism of action of anti-asthenic drug is still unknown. However, research community believes Sulbutiamine increase physical resistance to weakness, augments learning, memory and neuromuscular efficiency. Sulbutiamine improves the metabolism of the cerebral cortex.


After oral administration, Sulbutiamine is rapidly absorbed in the GIT. After GI absorption, Sulbutiamine is well-distributed in all tissues. Sulbutiamine can blood-brain barrier. The half-life of Sulbutiamine is about 5 hours.
