Butamirate is a centrally-acting cough-suppressant. Butamirate is prescribed for the treatment of dry cough including pertussis and cough associated with bronchoscopy.

Pharmacodynamics

Butamirate exert central action and suppress cough symptoms in patients with non-productive cough. Butamirate possesses moderate bronchodilatation and anti-inflammatory properties. Butamirate can significantly increase the spirometry index and blood oxygenation levels.

Pharmacokinetics

After oral administration, Butamirate is extensively absorbed. The plasma half-life of Butamirate is about 12 hours. The prime route of elimination is via the urine.

Dosage

As a Cough suppressant (Adults):
Consider administration of 30 mg/day. The maximum dose should not exceed 90 mg/day. As a modified-release formulation, consider administration of 50 mg, twice or thrice daily.
