Butriptyline, a class of non-selective monoamine reuptake inhibitors, is indicated for the treatment and management of depression.


Similar to Amitriptyline, Butriptyline possesses the anti-depressant property by inhibition of neuronal re-uptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. The tricyclic anti-depressant drug exerts weak sedating property.

Butriptyline Adverse Reactions / Butriptyline Side Effects

Butriptyline can cause galactorrhoea, hypersensitivity reactions, behavioural changes, sexual dysfunctions, cardiovascular effects, tremors, nausea, sweating, testicular enlargement, dyskinesia, fever, seizures, movement disorders, hyperglycemia, bulimia and blood dyscrasia.


Butriptyline is contraindicated in patients with porphyria, severe hepatic disorders, behavioural disorders, recent history of MI and CVD, seizures, close-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, diabetes, concurrent electroconvulsive therapy, pheochromocytoma and thyroid dysfunctions. Do not withdraw Butriptyline treatment abruptly. Butriptyline may impair thinking and alertness. Do not drive vehicles or operate heavy machinery while taking Butriptyline.

Butriptyline may interact with verapamil, disulfiram, diltiazem, cimetidine, adrenaline, amiodarone, SSRIs, thioridazine, propafenone, baclofen, sotalol, MAOIs, noradrenaline, sibutramine, estrogen, nitrates, carbamazepine, terfenadine, clonidine, procainamide, pimozide, opioid analgesics, sedatives, anti-muscarinics and anxiolytics.
