Sodium Nitroprusside, a vasodilator, is prescribed for the treatment of congestive heart failure and serious hypertension. Sodium Nitroprusside is also used to reduce blood pressure during a surgical procedure. Sodium Nitroprusside relaxes vascular vessel muscles and facilitates dilation and lowers arterial and venous blood pressure.

Sodium Nitroprusside can cause sweating, tremors, muscle twitching, overactive reflexes, uneven heart beats, shallow breathing, confusion, tinnitus, chills, numbness of the extremities, injection-site reactions, thrombophlebitis, mild abdominal pain and nausea.

Sodium Nitroprusside is contraindicated in patients with history of hemorrhagic blood clots, vision changes due to smoking, anemia, renal and/or hepatic disorders, hypertension and inheritant vision loss, history of traumatic head injury or brain tumor and convulsion.

Dosage

For Hypertensive Emergency (Adults):
Start with an initial dose of 0.3 mcg/kg/min as continuous intravenous infusions. For maintenance dose, the dosage can be titrated to a maximum of 10 mcg/kg/min.
For Congestive Heart Failure (Adults):
Start with an initial dose of 10-15 mcg/kg/min as continuous intravenous infusions. For maintenance dose, the dosage can be titrated to 10-200 mcg/kg/min. The maximum dosage should not exceed 280 mcg/min.
