Papaverine, a vasodilator, is prescribed for the treatment of intestinal and urine tract spasms. Papaverine relaxes blood vessels and facilitates blood flow in the spasmodic smooth muscles.
Papaverine exerts direct action on smooth muscles and cardiac muscles and alleviates spasms. However, the drug action is unrelated to muscle innervation. Anti-spasmodic activity of Papaverine relaxes smooth muscles of the pulmonary, coronary and systemic peripheries. Papaverine can lower cerebral vascular resistance and augments cerebral and cardiac hemodynamics.
