Monobenzone topical is prescribed to permanently lighten the skin colour in vitiligo patients. Monobenzone is a depigmentation formulation that increases removal of melanin from skin cells. Depigmentation of skin adjacent to the affected area can help to look as even/normal skin colour and appearance. However, Monobenzone should not be used for the treatment of jaundice, freckles, sun damage, melanoma and other skin pigmentation problems.

Monobenzone can cause redness, swelling of skin, severe skin irritation, intense itching, severe burning sensation, mild skin rashes and dryness or flaking of skin.

Precautions

Monobenzone treatment can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight and irritation for the lifetime. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight and use sunscreen lotions to avoid sunburns. Monobenzone can cause colour changes in the untreated skin. Consult a dermatologist to lower/avoid such problems.

Dosage

Apply a thin layer of Monobenzone topical should be applied at least twice or thrice daily onto the affected area and rub gently. Complete depigmentation can be achieved after 16 weeks of treatment. After clinical response, application of Monobenzone should be limited to twice per week.
