A team of Cambridge University researchers have developed a wonder drug that could treat the pancreatic cancer in less than one week. The experimental drug Plerixafor or AMD3100 could even treat the late-stage pancreatic cancer patients, according to the scientists’ claims.
Plerixafor could be effective against pancreatic cancer as well as other tumors. The study results will be announced by this year end.
Pancreatic cancer cells use thick wall of chemokines as a protective barrier. This immune-evading mechanism prevents the immune attack on the tumor cells. Enabling the body’s own immune defense to attack malignant cancer could significantly improve the cancer treatment benefits, according to Dr. Douglas Fearon, the study guide.
Plerixafor degrade chemokines and facilitate T-cell attack on tumors. The results were based on experimental studies. The researchers have planned to conduct human clinical trials. In the experimental animal studies, the drug wiped out malignant cells within six days.
