Menotropin is prescribed for the stimulation of ovulation in women who produce normal ovarian follicles with impaired hormonal stimulation. Menotropin is also prescribed for the stimulation of multiple eggs in invitro fertilization procedures. Menotropin is also used to stimulate spermatogenesis in men with normal testes functions and impaired hormonal stimulation.
Menotropin is a synthetic, combined formulation of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing-hormone. The hormones are vital for ovarian follicle development and spermatogenesis.

Menotropin Adverse Reactions / Menotropin Side Effects

Few Menotropin-treated women reported ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) immediately after the first cycle of Menotropin therapy. Some of the other reported adverse events of Menotropin are ovarian hypertrophy, pelvic pain, serious pulmonary problems, nausea, shortness of breath, myalgia, injection-site reaction, fever, chills, headache and breast tenderness/enlargement. Multiple births is the main adverse events of Menotropin.

Precautions

Menotropin is contraindicated in pregnant women, patient with thyroid dysfunctions, cancers of hypothalamus, pituitary, breasts, ovarian cysts, chronic illness and undiagnosed vaginal bleeding.

Dosage

For Ovulation Induction (Adults):
Start with an initial dose of 150 International Units (IU), SC/IM for 5 days. For maintenance dose should be increased based on clinical response in intervals of at least 2 days. The maximum daily dose of Menotropin should not exceed 450 IU. The treatment should not continue more than 12 days.


For Follicle Stimulation (Adults):
Start with an initial dose of 225 International Units (IU), SC/IM for 5 days. For maintenance dose should be increased based on clinical response in intervals of at least 2 days. The maximum daily dose of Menotropin should not exceed 450 IU. The treatment should not continue more than 12 days.
