Chlorthalidone, a thiazide group of diuretic drug is indicated for the treatment of edema (fluid retention) and hypertension. Chlorthalidone is prescribed for management of edema in congestive heart failure patients, renal and hepatic cirrhosis patients, hypertensive patients and corticosteroids-induced fluid retention.

Chlorthalidone may cause jaundice-like reactions, vomiting, dry mouth, numbness, arrhythmia, bleeding or bruising tendencies, myalgia and dizziness with tingling. Other less serious adverse events of Chlorthalidone are muscular spasm, diarrhoea or constipation, anorexia, headache and anuria.

Precautions

Chlorthalidone is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to sulfa drugs, diabetic individuals, hepatic and renal disorders, asthmatic disorders, gout and lupus patients.

Insulin, oral anti-diabetic drugs, lithium, corticosteroids, digoxin and anti-hypertensive drugs may interact with Chlorthalidone.

Drinking alcoholic beverages will impair the amphetamine metabolism and increases the level of drug in the blood that may lead to serious side effects. Avoid hot weather conditions that may cause dehydration and/or overheating of body with the loss of body fluids and electrolytes. As per physician’s directions, consume ample amount of fluids to avoid dehydrate.

Start with 50-100 mg, oral, once daily initial dose. For maintenance dose, 25-100 mg, once daily or 50-200mg, every other day should be considered.
Hypertension (Adults):
Start with 25 mg, oral, once daily initial dose. For maintenance dose, 25-100 mg, once daily should be considered.
