Thyroxine can cause excessive weight loss, insomnia, muscle weakness, flushing, headache, paced heart beats, palpitations, chest pain, menstrual problems, diarrhoea and heat intolerance.

Precautions

Thyroxine is contraindicated in patients with difficulties in swallowing, heart disorders, hypertension, anemia, osteoporosis, thyroid disorders, bleeding disorders, diabetes mellitus and allergy to synthetic formulations.

Dosage

The recommended initial adult dosage of Thyroxine is 50-100 mcg/day. The dosage can be increased by 25-50 mcg at 3-4 weeks intervals. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 150-300 mcg.
The recommended initial pediatric dosage of Thyroxine is 25-150 mcg/day. The dosage can be increased by 25 mcg every 2-4 weeks.
