Pethidine can cause nausea or vomiting, constipation, dizziness, nervousness, irritability, rashes, depression, hallucination, tremors, muscle twitches, convulsions, drowsiness, abdominal cramps, changes in urination frequency, anorexia, spincture muscle dysfunction, injection-site reactions and muscle spasm.

Precautions

Pethidine should be used with caution in patients with Cor pulmonale, breathing difficulties, hypothyroidism, severe renal disease, neonates, biliary tract diseases, BPH, myasthenia gravis, convulsion, adrenocorticol insufficiency, shock and premature babies.

Pethidine is contraindicated in patients’ with elevated intracranial pressure, coma, head injuries, obstructive airway diseases, respiratory depression, Pethidine allergy, pheochromocytoma.

Do not use Pethidine within two weeks after MAOIs withdrawal.

Do not drive vehicle or operate heavy machineries while receiving Pethidine treatment.

Do not stop Pethidine treatment abruptly. It can cause serious withdrawal symptoms.

Pethidine may interact with cimetidine, anti-cholinergics, MAOIs, general anaesthesia, anxiolytics, hypnotics, phenothiazine, anti-depressants, analgesics and hypnotics.

Other Interactions

Do not consume alcohol while taking Pethidine. It may cause serious adverse events.

Dosage

For moderate to severe acute pain (Adult):
Consider oral administration of 50-150 mg of Pethidine, every four hours.
 
As an adjunct to anaesthesia (Adults):
As an intravenous infusion, consider administration of 10-25 mg of Pethidine.
 
For moderate to severe acute pain (Adult):
As intravenous/subcutaneous/intra-muscular injections, consider administration of 25-100 mg of Pethidine, every four hours.
 
For obstetric analgesia (Adults):
As IV/IM/SC injection, consider administration of 50-100 mg of Pethidine, as soon as contractions occur. Administer at regular intervals of 1-3 hours. The maximum dose should not exceed 400 mg/day.
 
For pre-operative medication (Adults):
Consider administration of 25-100 mg of Pethidine one hour before surgery.
 
For post-operative pain (Adults):
Consider administration of 25-100 mg, every 2-3 hours, as needed.
