Gemeprost, a synthetic prostaglandin analogue, is indicated for the induction of abortion, augmentation of labour and to reduce haemorrhage from the placental site.

Gemeprost can cause fever, palpitations, headache, myalgia, backache, chest pain, vaginal bleeding, nausea or vomiting and mild uterine pain. Some of the serious and fatal adverse events of Gemeprost are coronary spasm with MI, serious hypotension and uterine rupture.

Precautions

Gemeprost is contraindicated in patients with elevated IOP, vaginitis, COPD, cervicitis, CV insufficiency, unexplained vaginal bleeding, uterine scarring and placenta previa.

Dosage

For treatment of intrauterine foetal death:
Administer Gemeprost vaginal pessary (1 mg) into the posterior fornix, every three hours. The maximum dose should not exceed 5 pessaries administration.
For 2nd trimester abortion:
Administer Gemeprost vaginal pessary (1 mg) into the posterior fornix, every three hours. The maximum dose should not exceed 5 pessaries administration. The second course of treatment should be continued after 24 hours of the first course.
For cervical ripening:
Administer 1mg of Gemeprost pessary into the posterior fornix at least three hours before surgery.
