Ferrous ascorbate can cause pyrosis, chronic constipation, chest pain, injection-site reaction, anaphylactic reactions, flushing, diarrhoea or constipation, regurgitation, dark coloured stools, pyrosis and nausea.

Precautions

Ferrous ascorbate is contraindicated in patients with haemolytic anemia, hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis and other iron overload disorders. Hematinic may aggravate regional enteritis, peptic ulcer and ulcerative colitis. Ferrous ascorbate is contraindicated in patients with supplemental iron hypersensitivity.

Ferrous ascorbate may interact with calcium supplements, methyldopa, penicillamine, bisphosphonate, levodopa, tetracycline, antacids and quinolones.

Ferrous ascorbate metabolism is impaired by tannins such as tea, phytic acid, Saw palmetto and roughage-adding foods.

Dosage

Consider administration of 100 mg of Ferrous ascorbate once daily. The dosage of Ferrous ascorbate can be increased, if required.

Ferrous ascorbate should be taken after meals. However, the absorption may be altered due to pH alterations. If required, take other drugs at least 2-3 hours after Ferrous ascorbate administration.
