Nepafenac, an ophthalmic, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is indicated to treat the pain and inflammation in eyes.  Nepafenac is also prescribed to lower the pain and swelling in post-surgical cataract patients.

Pharmacodynamics

After ocular administration, the drug penetrates through the cornea and metabolized into amfenac by ocular tissue hydrolases. The converted drug inhibits the action of prostaglandin H synthase and reduces symptoms of inflammation.

Nepafenac Adverse Reactions / Nepafenac Side Effects

Nepafenac can cause eye redness, itching, watery eyes, stuffy nose, nausea, vomiting, headache, photophobia, headache and foreign body sensation in eyes. Stop using Nepafenac, if symptoms like vision problems, swollen eyelids, severe eye pain or itching occurs.

Precautions

Nepafenac can cause arthritis, bleeding disorders, diabetes and dry eye syndrome. Contact lens wearers should not use Nepafenac ophthalmic solution.

Dosage

For Postoperative Ocular Inflammation (Adults):
As 0.1% ophthalmic suspension, apply one drop of Nepafenac ophthalmic solution in the affected eye(s) thrice a day. The treatment should be started one day before surgery, on the day of surgery and up to 14 days, post-surgery.
 
As 0.3% ophthalmic suspension, apply one drop of Nepafenac ophthalmic solution in the affected eye(s) thrice a day. The treatment should be started one day before surgery, on the day of surgery and up to 14 days, post-surgery.  An additional dose should be applied at least 30-120 minutes before surgery.

In children more than or equal to ten years of age, As 0.1% ophthalmic suspension, apply one drop of Nepafenac ophthalmic solution in the affected eye(s) thrice a day. The treatment should be started one day before surgery, on the day of surgery and up to 14 days, post-surgery.
