Methylphenidate may cause personality and/or behavioural changes, panic, delusion, hallucinations, unusual behaviours, motor tics, panics, severe numbness, easy bruising, serious hypertension, vision changes, sudden weakness and/or numbness. Some of the other commonly reported adverse events are stomach pain, anorexia, insomnia, irritability, nausea, GI upset, drowsiness and weight loss.

Precautions

Avoid taking Methylphenidate while taking Mono Amine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) or if taken in the past two weeks. Serious drug interactions are reported with Isocarboxazid, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, linezolid and phenelzine. Methylphenidate is contraindicated in patients with glaucoma, severe anxiety and tension, personal history of tics, Tourette ’s syndrome and agitation. Stimulants administration may cause sudden deaths in children and adolescents with serious heart problems including congenital heart problems. Methylphenidate is contraindicated in patients with high blood pressure, congenital heart problems, angina, history of drug/alcohol addiction, GI disorders, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, bipolar disorders, heart rhythm disorders and depressive disorders. To avoid iatrogenic insomnia, the drug should be taken earlier in the day and before 6 PM evening. Stop taking Methylphenidate if advised to undergo surgery in the near future.
